The format for the 2026 FIFA World Cup sees 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four teams each. Here, each team within their group will play until the top two teams of their group proceed to the Round of 32, a more traditional bracket elimination format where the winning team will progress towards the finals.

What makes the 2026 FIFA World Cup Exciting

The 2026 edition of the FIFA World Cup is an exciting one, as the number of countries that are participating has increased from 32 teams to 48 teams. And instead of eight groups of four teams, there are now 12 groups of four teams. This is done to include more countries from continents such as Asia and the Middle East to participate in the world’s biggest football event.

Additionally, the 2026 FIFA World Cup sees new records being made: Africa has the largest World Cup contingent numbers increase with 10 teams compared to 5 in 2022, nine allocations in Asia from six, and Europe having the largest share with 16 spots instead of 13.

Furthermore, football fans will be seeing four nations making their World Cup debut: Jordan, Uzbekistan, Cape Verde, and Curacao.
